Quantum Engineer - Quantum Processor Prototyping

Sydney

Silicon Quantum Computing (SQC) is at the forefront of global efforts to build the world’s first commercial-scale quantum computer, while delivering quantum-enhanced AI and simulation products to customers today.

Backed by over 25 years of technological excellence, SQC is a full-stack quantum computing company that leverages its proprietary manufacturing process to engineer atomic qubits in silicon with 0.13 nanometer precision. It is the most precise semiconductor manufacturing in the world, enabling systems with world-leading algorithmic fidelity, and a decisive advantage in the global quantum computing race.

Our products are commercially deployed and generating revenue. Watermelon, our quantum-enhanced AI system, is delivering superior results on real-world problems across energy, telecom and finance. Quantum Twins, our simulation platform, provides unparalleled ability to model quantum systems, accelerating molecule and materials discovery.

This is SQC: building the future of computing while delivering quantum impact today.

About the role

We are hiring a Quantum Engineer to strengthen the prototyping loop behind SQC’s atomic-precision quantum processors. Sitting at the interface between atomic-scale fabrication and cryogenic measurement, you will standardise how devices are tested and qualified as they move from design and fabrication through to 4K and mK characterisation. You will analyse fabrication and measurement data side by side to understand how atomic-scale fabrication decisions shape device performance, and use that insight to drive quality control, yield, and throughput across the prototyping pipeline. This role suits someone with a materials science or nano-device background who enjoys rigorous, systematic work and wants to see their analysis directly shape how next-generation quantum processors are built.

Role responsibilities

  • Develop, standardise, and document test protocols across the QPU prototyping loop, from design and atomic-scale fabrication through to 4K and mK testing.
  • Establish and run quality-control processes for device screening, ensuring devices are qualified consistently against defined criteria before progressing to full characterisation.
  • Analyse atomic-scale fabrication data and correlate fabrication parameters with measured device characteristics and performance.
  • Build and maintain structured records of device metrics to track yield, identify failure modes, and improve prototyping-loop efficiency.
  • Work closely with atomic fabrication, cleanroom, and measurement teams to feed findings back into device design and fabrication processes.
  • Contribute to root-cause analysis when devices underperform, and help drive fixes across team boundaries.
  • Contribute to technical strategy and innovation by proposing and implementing new ideas and solutions.

Your experience

Essential:

  • Bachelor’s, Honours, or Master’s degree in physics, materials science, nanotechnology, quantum engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Hands-on experience with nanoscale device fabrication or characterisation in academic or industrial environments.
  • Strong data analysis skills and proficiency in coding using Python.
  • Highly organised, detail-oriented, and rigorous in documentation and process.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams with shared ownership of outcomes.

Desirable:

  • PhD in physics, materials science, nanotechnology, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with cryogenic measurements of semiconductor or quantum devices.
  • Familiarity with quality-control and yield methodologies from semiconductor manufacturing.

The recruitment process

For roles at SQC, expect 3-4 interviews, meeting a few members of the team and focusing on your core eligibility for the role, your skills and how they align, and finally your values and how they align. We'll give you a more specific runthrough if you're successful in making it to the first interview.

As part of our obligations to our clients, we require that successful candidates submit to background checks, including a National Police Check, Right to Work checks, as well as employment and qualifications verification. We won't contact anyone until we're confident there's a fit between SQC and yourself.

Equal opportunity

SQC is an equal opportunity employer. We value diverse perspectives and experiences, and encourage applications from candidates who may not meet every listed requirement. If you’re excited about the role and believe you can contribute, we encourage you to apply.

Export controls

This position may require access to export-controlled information or technology. Employment may be subject to applicable export control laws and may require eligibility assessment based on factors such as nationality, citizenship, or residency, and, where necessary, obtaining relevant export licenses or approvals.

About SQC

SQC was founded by renowned physicist and materials scientist Michelle Simmons, who pioneered the field of atomic electronics, including the development of the world’s first single-atom transistor and the first integrated circuit built with atomic precision. Our Chair, Simon Segars, former CEO of Arm, is a leader in the semiconductor industry and was instrumental in developing the processors that powered the mobile computing revolution.

As a full-stack company with in-house QPU manufacturing, SQC can design, produce and test new quantum chips in under a week, enabling rapid iteration and a decisive advantage in the race to build the world’s first commercial-scale quantum computer.

SQC is a high-accountability environment built on a simple principle: Every Atom Counts. If you’re looking to play a meaningful role in building the next frontier of computing, we’d love to hear from you.
