Senior FPGA Engineer

Sydney

Silicon Quantum Computing (SQC) is at the forefront of global efforts to build the world’s first commercial-scale quantum computer, while delivering quantum-enhanced AI and simulation products to customers today.

Backed by over 25 years of technological excellence, SQC is a full-stack quantum computing company that leverages its proprietary manufacturing process to engineer atomic qubits in silicon with 0.13 nanometer precision. It is the most precise semiconductor manufacturing in the world, enabling systems with world-leading algorithmic fidelity, and a decisive advantage in the global quantum computing race.

Our products are commercially deployed and generating revenue. Watermelon, our quantum-enhanced AI system, is delivering superior results on real-world problems across energy, telecom and finance. Quantum Twins, our simulation platform, provides unparalleled ability to model quantum systems, accelerating molecule and materials discovery.

This is SQC: building the future of computing while delivering quantum impact today.

About the role

We're hiring a senior FPGA Design Engineer with experience on Xilinx RFSoC platforms to join our multidisciplinary hardware team. This is a hands-on role for someone with a solid grounding in both analogue and digital design, working where RF, digital, and embedded systems come together. You'll help design and integrate advanced systems that make the most of RFSoC technology, working across high-speed data conversion, digital signal processing, and programmable logic. The work spans the full design cycle, from architecture and implementation through to testing and integration on real hardware, in a fast-paced environment where the requirements evolve as the systems mature.

This role doesn't have direct reports, but it's a senior seat on the team. You'll bring depth across both the analogue and digital sides, take on the harder design problems, and play a key part in supporting and mentoring the engineers around you.

Role responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and test FPGA-based designs targeting Xilinx RFSoC devices, including the Zynq UltraScale+ RFSoC family

  • Collaborate on system-level architecture and partitioning between programmable logic (PL), processing system (PS), and RF/data converter subsystems

  • Integrate analogue signal chains (e.g., ADCs, DACs) with digital logic in high-bandwidth and low-latency systems

  • Design and implement DSP pipelines, AXI-based interfaces, and control logic in Verilog (or VHDL)

  • Work with high-speed I/O, clocks, resets, and synchronisation circuits

  • Utilise Vivado and Vitis for design, simulation, synthesis, and system integration

  • Conduct timing closure, resource optimisation, and verification using simulation and hardware-in-the-loop testing

  • Support hardware bring-up, signal integrity analysis, and debugging with test equipment (oscilloscopes, spectrum analysers, etc.)

  • Explore and prototype new design ideas, contributing to architecture discussions and innovation

  • Ensure hazards and risks psychosocial and physical are identified and controlled for tasks, projects, and activities that pose a health and safety risk within your area of responsibility.

Your experience

  • A degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent), with 3–6 years of hands-on FPGA development experience

  • Extensive experience working with Xilinx RFSoC platforms, particularly UltraScale+ Zynq-based devices

  • Proficient in RTL design using VHDL, Verilog, or SystemVerilog

  • Skilled in using the Xilinx Vivado Design Suite, including IP Integrator, block design methodology, and constraint management

  • Solid understanding of analogue signal behaviour, sampling theory, and integration of mixed-signal systems

  • Familiarity with digital signal processing techniques such as filtering, decimation/interpolation, FFTs, and modulation

  • Practical knowledge of CPU microarchitecture design, including ALUs, pipelines, and memory interfaces. Experience with implementing soft-core CPUs on FPGA is a strong plus

  • Proficient in integrating AXI4 interfaces and DMA engines with embedded software running on ARM processors

  • Experience contributing to Python-based driver layers and writing robust unit tests for automated build systems and CI/CD workflows

  • Working knowledge of software development in languages such as Rust or C

  • Demonstrated curiosity and willingness to engage with novel architectures, explore design trade-offs, and participate in iterative prototyping.

Equal opportunity

SQC is an equal opportunity employer. We value diverse perspectives and experiences, and encourage applications from candidates who may not meet every listed requirement. If you’re excited about the role and believe you can contribute, we encourage you to apply.

Export controls

This position may require access to export-controlled information or technology. Employment may be subject to applicable export control laws and may require eligibility assessment based on factors such as nationality, citizenship, or residency, and, where necessary, obtaining relevant export licenses or approvals.

About SQC

SQC was founded by renowned physicist and materials scientist Michelle Simmons, who pioneered the field of atomic electronics, including the development of the world’s first single-atom transistor and the first integrated circuit built with atomic precision. Our Chair, Simon Segars, former CEO of Arm, is a leader in the semiconductor industry and was instrumental in developing the processors that powered the mobile computing revolution.

As a full-stack company with in-house QPU manufacturing, SQC can design, produce and test new quantum chips in under a week, enabling rapid iteration and a decisive advantage in the race to build the world’s first commercial-scale quantum computer.

SQC is a high-accountability environment built on a simple principle: Every Atom Counts. If you’re looking to play a meaningful role in building the next frontier of computing, we’d love to hear from you.
